On the Pope
I just recently finished an article for our magazine, focusing on how Pope John Paul II was the Pope of the youth. I interviewed three friends, Chanchan, Chabs, and Mika from my Theology class last year. Weaving their thoughts into a story made me think more about what I would answer to the question : "Who is Pope John Paul II for me?"
Come to think of it, I answered that in my article.
"On the night of April 2, 2005, the youth collectively lost their champion, hero, mentor and friend."
I was more excited to write the article than I was to write about a previous "man-on-the-street"/"friends-on-the-phone" interview on ABS-CBN shows. (Although I promise to find another way to give my friends exposure LOL) Maybe because I feel like it's the only way I can take part in this whole story, and the only way I can show a man that I never knew just how much I appreciated his presence, and every effort he gave for the world.
I remember being moved to tears when the Pope visited the Philippines, way back when I was a kid, even if I never met him in person. I shed no tears for him now, truthfully, because I'm more relieved that his physical suffering has finally ended. It hurt whenever I saw him on TV, barely able to move, nor speak. I think he has suffered enough for all of us.
Ultimately, I am hopeful and optimistic that he has left a lasting legacy for us, and his successor as well. Hopefully his footprint on the world (literally, for he was the most traveled pope ^_^) left a mark enough to show us, even slightly, how we can improve the current state that our world is in.
Thank you for the time you spent with us, Karol. I hope you're not still worrying about us down here, we'll find a way to make it through, so please try to rest in peace. ^_^. Hope to see you someday in Heaven. ^_^
